Romantic Dinner

Our cab driver to the restaurant decided to join us (?!). We finally had something to talk about at dinner.

La Ciudad de...nada?

Turns out there isn't much to do in Medellin. Observations so far (in order of abundance): pollution, barefoot men taking naps on the streets, hills (doesn't bode well for our Machu Picchu trek), and bad haircuts.

On the bright side, our hotel has american TV - Queer Eye for the Straight Guy has never been so good.
Checked out a museum yesterday with a huge Botero collection. Also caught a parade around Parque Bolivar...very Columbian - everyone was in fatigues, which was, well, pretty freaky. We then took the [very clean and safe] subway system to the Parque Lleras area for some afternoon cocktails. We knew it was a nice neighborhood after passing a packed Hooters.

Today: jumped on one of the metro system's three cable cars for an eye-opening view of the mountain side barrios. Very interesting.

Killing time until dinner...

Last Day in Cartagena

Went out for beers last night at a local - and very divey - bar called Whiskeria Zorba. Sat next to an old man who finished 15 beers by himself.

Playa Blanca

Took a terrifying boat trip to Playa Blanca today. Safety regulations in Columbia do not exist. Well worth the freakout however.

Cartagena Day Two

Finally have internet connection at our hotel in Cartagena - going to post a quick note before losing it again.

It is HOT in Columbia. After an early breakfast we took a dip in the pool for a few hours to cool off. The rooftop is beautiful - great views of the old, walled city and a perfect breeze. The staff at the hotel is great...they delivered water with mint (served all over the city) and mojitos every 1/2 hour. Not bad.

Took a stroll around town this afternoon and checked out a museum. Back at the hotel now for a quick nap before heading out to dinner at Casa de Socorro - traditional Columbian food. We've read great reviews.

Thinking of heading out to one of the barrier islands for a day at the beach tomorrow. Stay tuned.
